The Mash-up

This week's assignment concentrates on remix culture. In an age where technology gives us the ability to be influenced by art and culture from around the world in a matter of seconds, it is understandable that we borrow, reinvent, remix the work of others into new works of art. This type of work is part of the artist culture but is encouraged more so than ever now in our current society. Remix culture, as I understood it, is the creation of work using various mediums that can be composed of either by the past or present works. Together these two or more mediums create concepts/ideas or objects that otherwise would have no relation in society or reality. The result of creating a mashup is to incite an immediate feeling, intention, concept or message from the jarring juxtaposing composition.

I immediately thought of social media and the phenomenon in this era where our opinions, likes and dislikes can physically harm the mental state of someone. Once only a weapon could create physical harm, now, we see the detrimental impact of social media. The Facebook "like" icon seemed to be the right fit for the concept I was going for. Besides having difficulty creating the smoke object, I think the purpose was successful. The bullet is substituted with the "Likes" emoticon.

2. Modern Art

Thinking about modern society got me thinking of our past views on art and our image. It got me thinking of what a greek sculpture would look like dolled up in what consumer society would deem art.

3. Martini Magic

In reflecting on the media and consumer culture, I thought of all the toys we were given as children and what they represent. Toy soldiers were always a part of my toy box, but now their image means something a lot more volatile and aggressive. My thought was to put it in a margarita and chill the little guy out.

4. Dino-rina

Staying on the subject of toys, no one my age could forget the T-Rex doll! My favourite movie as a child was Jurassic Park.  My favourite doll was also a ballerina, so why not remix it to have my dream toy. Merging, these two objects turned out to be harder than I thought. The angles on both objects were extreme, so the cutting took longer than anticipated... all for a pink tutu.

5. Lamp of the Future

In reflecting on all the things I cherished as a child, I got a little nostalgic and recalled the infamous Lava Lamp because let's be honest.. you weren't cool if you didn't have a Lava Lamp. I always thought the lava looked like Jelly Fish, so I figured id make my dreams come true and create a world where a jellyfish can live in a lamp and travel outward into the world. I wanted to have the jellyfish have long flowing tentacles, so I combined three different models of jellyfish into one.

6. Snail Slow

Staying true to myself, I thought of what else I cherish that has yet to lose its popularity. I love to skateboard, and somehow, it hasn't been lost in the turn of this century. However, I do recall bombing down the empty streets as fast as possible. It doesn't seem to be as much of a reality now, and days the world gets more digital, I feel like life gets slower, hence the snail board.

7. Bearaling Bear

One of my favourite things to do is surf, and since teddy bears are always seen as the sweet lovable toy, why not throw it on the wave and see if he can barrel. This relates to the fierce nature of a bear in its opposing natural element.

8. Rocking Muffin

I wanted to create a creature, but I did not want it to be some creepy dogcat, so I decided to merge my love for music and baking.

9. Swordfish

I knew I wanted to use a fish for something, the shape and novelty of it intrigued me. I was browsing objects and came across a sword, and it hit me. Swordfish!

10. Banana boat

Finally came the ending image a banana; for some reason in my toy box, I had a plastic banana, and I realized a lot of my friends had one too. No clue what toy designer came up with that one, but what the hell it sold. Nothing else like a summer day on a banana boat.

  1. I really enjoyed your "Dino-rina," Jurassic Park is still one of my favourites, the tutu is and the Dino-rina dancing is cute.
