Paper Craft Artist - Raya Sader Bujana
This week's assignment was to go through a list of designers that work with paper as a medium and choose one that speaks to us. The designer I decided to research is Raya Sader Bujana in Barcelona.
Raya is a Lebanese paper artist who studied architecture in Venezuela.
Her designs are intricate, textured pieces that capture the pure form of her subject. Whether it is jewelry, plants or figures, all her projects are created using a variety of patterns, styles and techniques.
Her design of the Olympic Figures was a process mapping out a series of Planes to capture the human form in movement using cut paper. This style strongly reflects her studies in architecture. As I examined her figures, I was stunned at the level of detail. Light and shadow were captured throughout each layer of paper, providing depth and movement to each part of the body.
In researching more about her, I found a blog post of her explaining her process step by step as she creates a plant out of paper. It was terrific to get insight into her process as she explains... " I try to get as much little detail into everything I do and am always learning, practicing and trying to get a little better." - blog.ohhdeer.com
Upon further research, it was fascinating to find out that she does all her work by hand. When you look at the intricate pieces she produces, it is shocking that she chooses to work that way, considering that some of the figures contain approx 150 tiny pieces and 500 separators. She describes working with paper like a sculptor would describe working with clay.
She says, "I do not use lasers, I make all the cuts with a scalpel and then I begin to mold the paper and work the textures to try to get organic and fluid pieces." Her technique is obviously successful as you can see her sculpture are so often organic shapes that you can't imagine being made with paper.
