Final Surface Design
My final design is influenced by the Calgary skyline at sunset. While I was doing my research, I realized how much I love straight edges in the design. I have always found it complicated to make an attractive design that doesn't involve many curves. Finally, using these elements of my research, I began formulating the beginnings of my surface design. Working with squares colour would be my foundation to ensure I got dimension and not a flat image. Unfortunately, Rhino does not provide a transparent command for Hatches, so I had to improvise as best I could.
I began using the image as my base for my design and trying to replicate the transitional colours and abstracting the landscape as much as possible.
I knew that colour would play an essential part in ensuring I got a surface design with texture, so I began by choosing my colours and creating layers.
I wanted to create a focal point to the pattern to include more curvilinear and 3D boxes. This turned out to be an ultimate fail. As much as I tried to make the design cohesive, there were always pockets of negative space that would divert the eye away from the most exciting part of the design.
After a lot of trial and error, I came up with a design I was happy with. It is my interpretation of the Calgary skyline at sunset.
